Free Diabetes Education Classes

June 26, 2018 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Free

Diabetes is a complex disease that requires many components of daily self-management in order to stay healthy. From making healthy food choices, to staying active, checking your blood sugar and taking medications, there are many things you need to monitor on a daily basis. Education is key to handling these issues and reducing your risk for complications.

According to the American Diabetes Association, over 30.3 million Americans – 9.4% of the population – have diabetes. Diet, insulin and oral medication to lower blood glucose levels are the foundation of diabetes treatment and management. Patient education and self-care practices are also important aspects of disease management that help people with diabetes lead normal lives.

Research shows people who take part in diabetes education are more likely to:

·         Use primary care and preventive services

·         Take medications as prescribed

·         Control their blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol levels

·         Have lower health costs

Health First will be offering a diabetes education class in your area. DEEP (Diabetes Empowerment Education Program) is diabetes self-management through behavior change. This free, six-week course is taught in two-hour sessions and is fun and interactive. It encourages class participation through discussion and activities, and is taught without the use a medical jargon. DEEP training was developed by the University of Illinois and is proven to help patients reduce their risks of complications from diabetes. DEEP training is provided at no charge for participants at times and places convenient to them.
